In my last post, a week ago, I declared stability at ~97kg, essentially over the last three months:
The last two highs have both been 97.4kg and the last two lows 96.4kg and 96.3kg.
That didn't last long. Currently it's 95kg and apparently still dropping fast. That's not noise, you can see it on the graph. Something is up.
I am currently, for reasons, in receipt of occasional random gifts of organic vegetables in varying quantities. They are a revelation, taste-wise, and I have been meaning to write about them for a while. (This has been going on for the last six months, it is not a recent change.)
I want to do ex150 or something like it again, and this is a bit of a problem, because yams and potatoes can go in the forbidden cupboard for a bit, and ad-lib non-carby vegetables have always been part of my version of ex150 anyway, but these gifts often include fruit (e.g. OMG oranges and apples and pears that actually taste of orange, apple, pear respectively! Also beetroot. Fuck me, did you even know that beetroot tasted of beetroot?).
And fruit rots quickly, and these beautiful fruits are not going off on my watch.
So I thought this time I would do ex150ish, only I'm allowed to eat fruit too. I have been wondering whether ketosis is a necessary part of the ex150-effect, and this seems a good time to test that.
Five days ago I am sparring with dear old u/exfatloss in the comments:
Off to the supermarket as we speak to buy butter and cream and 80/20 beef and no other things.... Sadly I have a brand new batch of organic apples and oranges which I am not going to leave to rot, so ex150ish+fruit it is.
And so that is the day when I changed what I buy at the shops, no cheese, no bread, no black puddings. I bought beef and cream and sour cream and creme fraiche and butter and tomato puree, as I remember.
And for the rest of the week I've been running down my carb supply. Flour in the forbidden cupboard, potatoes and yams chopped into chips (steak fries US friends) and shallow fried in butter.
Some apples and pears that were going off and some veg and the beef in a nice big stew (with curry powder, and the fruit all disintegrated so it's basically fruit and beef soup with chopped veg in it curry at this point, yum.). Oh yes, also an OXO cube and some paprika.
Normally I would explain rapid weight loss like this as 'losing glycogen stores as I go into ketosis'.
But I've been eating chips all week. Ran out of yams and potatoes on Friday and milk yesterday. I'm maybe today losing glycogen, but not earlier.
If ex150ish-fruit-and-chips-and-milk-and-sour-cream works then I am well up for it. That's basically giving up bread and cheese. That's a diet I can sustain indefinitely I imagine.
Still, try the real thing as planned first. ex150ish-fruit it is. Just beef and veg and fruit and butter and double cream and coconut oil and beef dripping maybe for a couple of weeks.
So today is the official start of ex150ish-fruit. But something funny is already going on, and I have no explanation for it.
My seven-day average weight is 95kg and falling rapidly. My actual scale weight this morning was 94kg. That's about the point where I stop caring that I'm fat. BMI 29.6. Not a problem. BMI 27 would have been normal for me back in the day.
Also my waking temperature this morning was 37C, that's a bit high, but I feel fine. And my blood pressure was down to 131/73/50, which is about as low as it's been since I started measuring it.
Any idea how many carbs you've been eating a day? I find rice and potatoes don't have loads, depending on the quantity.
And you can put fruit into beef stew???? Hmmm, gonna have to try that ...
Oddly enough I've also settled into mostly eliminating bread and cheese and my weight is steadily trending downward. Not being super strict about it, I'll have a mocha or a pastry at a cafe if I feel like it.
But for my day to day meals, the stuff I buy to eat at home? No dairy except butter (if I wanted sour cream etc i'd probably include those, I just feel no desire for it) and no wheat.
I quit tracking calories cause it was too much bother but it's something like 60% carbs 30% fat 10% protein.
Oatmeal for breakfast with butter and salt and plenty of brown sugar. Potatoes or rice for lunch with butter and some kind of veg stew and some beef. The meat seems crucial, when I leave it off I get subtly unsatisfied and end up a bottomless unhappy pit for more rice. The veg also seems crucial.
Banana or other fruit in the afternoon for a snack, lots of sugar in my coffee, soft drinks a couple times a week.
Most evenings I don't seem to need any supper, but if I do I have more rice or potatoes or pancakes. Something mostly starch with some fat and maybe sugar.
When I eat bread or milk I bloat for a day or so and my weight jumps up but then ticks back down.
Curious to see how you get on.
