So, wondering why ex150ish-7 didn't work, I tried again but was super-strict about it.
So for ex150ish-8 I tried to stick to the original plan, just ad-lib cream and a stew of tomatoes, butter, coconut oil and spices plus beef restricted to 1kg/week of 80/20 minced beef from Sainsbury's. Plus keto-electrolytes and multi-vitamin pills and some vitamin C powder for flavouring (I'm avoiding vinegar because of sulphites and things don't taste acid enough without it).
I drank the last of my milk on the 16th, and things went exactly as expected, smooth entry into ketosis, very reduced appetite, excellent mental clarity. The only trace of keto-flu was a feeling of sluggishness for a couple of hours on each of the first four days. I never got the "two fuels" problem, in fact I've generally been feeling pretty sharp and energetic.
I tried u/exfatloss’s trick of mixing cream into coffee for breakfast. It spoils the coffee but it greatly improves the cream and makes a nice start to the day.
My weight was falling extremely fast, I think both water-weight and fat-burning. I wasn’t eating very much, although when I did occasionally feel hungry the food tasted great. I lost 3kgs over the week.
Unfortunately ex150ish-8 only lasted a week for social reasons (Three consecutive lunches with old friends suddenly appeared on the calendar, don't be a psycho....)
On Tue 22nd I met some friends for a pizza. Almost immediately afterwards I started to feel woozy and got a pain in the right side of my abdomen, where my appendix once was. After about four hours that all cleared up. I wonder if that was the effect of suddenly switching over to glucose metabolism as I digested the pizza.
After that for a couple of days I had a weird mix of occasional bursts of energy mixed with occasional bouts of lassitude.
On Thursday I ate a packet and a half of shortbread biscuits in the evening at choir and went into some sort of strange state of exhaustion, that lasted a couple of hours.
I was curious about this, so the following day I had another packet of shortbread for breakfast and didn't eat anything else. Weirdly I felt amazing all day.
Since then I've been eating swampy without any problems, and feeling fine.
It feels like after even a short bout of ketosis like this I get a few days where I just can't deal with mixed fat and carbs at the same time. If I recarb on pure carbs I feel fine, if I try to eat both it knocks me flat.
Anyway over a few days of lots of carbs my weight bounced back up and seems to have stabilized at around 95kg, so I seem to have lost about 0.5kg of actual body mass in one week of ex150ish. (Decorated with maybe two full kilos of water-weight off, water-weight back on). Which is pretty much exactly the expected effect.
But after such a short period it's difficult to say whether it actually worked or whether I’m being fooled by noise.
So I'm going to do it again, ex150ish-9 starts today. And I'll try and be as strict as possible and keep it up for longer this time.
If I have one tip for weight loss, it is: be a psycho.
