After the surprising failure of ex150ish-7 I felt a deep longing for carbohydrate, and I indulged it by trying to eat as many potatoes as possible.
This is very easy now it's got cold enough to run the stove, because I can just leave a pot of potatoes simmering on top of the stove and dip into it when hungry, so there've been potatoes available constantly for two weeks and I like them. Without their skins they don’t seem to have any adverse effects.
Otherwise I just ate ad-lib, so I won't call this HCLFLP, but there have been plenty of potatoes, as well as lots of bread and fruit. It's more like high-carb swamp but it wasn't a formal experiment
Last time I tried this high-carb stuff, I felt really hyper and very alert and overheated for a couple of weeks, and my weight was perfectly stable at around 94kg.
This time no such effect, in fact I've felt ill for half of it, brain-fogged and lethargic, and I keep getting headaches, which go away with ibuprofen and paracetamol but are still there when the drugs wear off.
But I was also sniffling all the time, I think I must have had a virus.
Apart from the likely virus period, I've felt pretty good! Just normal, no headaches, and my weight has been perfectly stable at 96.6kg. Which is too heavy to be comfortable.
I've been deliberately taking as much thyroid as I can handle, and achieving waking temperatures rather higher than I'm used to without apparent ill effect. But of course this might have been fever due to the virus.
Thyroid dose is now back to what it was before I went to visit my parents, and temperatures back to normal.
The virus is definitely gone now and I feel totally fine, maybe a bit too hot, so I think I'm now taking either the right amount or slightly too much.
The last few days I’ve been feeling alert and clever, fascinated by biochemistry and also I seem to be obsessing about the concept of entropy and trying to work out what chemical equilibrium is all about, which of course is essential knowledge if you're trying to understand biochemistry, but seems fascinating for its own sake. Lots of programs are getting written and calculations getting done. I haven't been this interested in maths for a couple of years. But I don’t feel weirdly hyper-focussed on random things like last time. It’s just good.
I've still got no idea what's going on weight-wise, but I don't want to write off ex150ish just yet, since it's always worked reliably before, and so I'm going to have another go.
Laplace tells us that if a thing's worked six times and failed once then we should give it a 7/9ths probability of working again.
But I find myself anticipating another failure. I think something's changed and I've no idea what it could be.
Anyway, for ex150ish-8 I'm going to try to be as strict as possible for as long as I can stand it, just in case I've started eating something habitually that's broken it. (eggs, black puddings?)
So just ad-lib beef, cream, tomatoes, butter, coconut oil and spices. Which I think were all things I ate the first time I did it. And the beef restricted to 1kg/week of 80/20 minced beef from Sainsbury's.
I’m also going to take my usual keto electrolytes and the multi-vitamin pills that I used the first time.
I predict losing about one-and-a-half kilos and then putting it back on once I reintroduce carbs.
I also predict smooth entry into ketosis, excellent mental clarity, the “two fuels” problem, and a very much reduced appetite for as long as I keep it up, since all those things seemed to work just the same in the failed ex150ish-7.
LaPlace must not've heard about path dependency
